Ben Hogan (19121997) was a 4-time PGA Player of Year. He is only one of five players to win all four Grand Slam titles [others are Nicklaus, Player, Sarazen and Woods]. Hogan also won 4 U.S. Opens, 2 Masters, 2 PGAs and 1 British Open, all between the years 1946 and 1953. He is one of only two players [Tiger Woods is the other]) to win three of the four majors in one year when he won the Masters, U.S. Open and British Open in 1953. After being nearly killed in a February 2, 1949 car accident he was told he might never walk again, but on January 1950, he battled Sam Snead to a playoff in the Los Angeles Open. In June of that year he won the US Open championship again. Hogan retained his US Open title in 1951 and won his first Masters. In 1953, he won five of the six tournaments he entered: the Masters for a second time, the US Open for a record-equaling fourth time, and the Open at Carnoustie in his only bid for this British title. Hogan is third on the all-time list of golf wins with 63 career victories. He played in the Ryder Cup twice, 1947 and 1951. He died on July 25, 1997 at the age of 85. |
